How to spray paint garage door?
These are the steps I follow whenever I want to spray paint garage doors of my house or of my clients to achieve the finish which I or my clients desire. Don’t miss any of these steps if you want a great finish without any uneven paint on the surface. These are the list of the tools you need to spray paint your garage doors at home.
- Spray paint
- Hand Sander/Orbital Sander
- Clear coat
- Drop clothes or rags
- Painters tape
- Wire brush
- Soapy water
Wear protective gear
Before you begin spray painting your garage door, it is important to wear the proper protective gear. This includes a respirator mask to protect your lungs from the fumes, goggles to protect your eyes, and gloves to protect your hands.
You will also need to cover any exposed skin with a long-sleeved shirt and pants. Once you have the proper gear on, you can begin to prep the door for painting.
Prepare the area around
In order to spray paint your garage door, you will need to first prepare the area around it. This means removing any objects that may be in the way, such as cars, lawn furniture, or children’s toys.
Once the area is clear, you will need to clean the surface of the door to remove any dirt or debris. Once the door is clean, you can then begin to spray paint it.
Clean the door
Before you begin spray painting your garage door, it is important to clean the door with a wire brush and soapy water.
Here is the picture of the garage door which I spray-painted for my client. I took the picture in between the process as you can see. I took the picture to show you guys the results.
This will remove any dirt or debris that could potentially interfere with the paint job. Once the door is clean, you can begin spray painting it with the color of your choice.
Sand the surface
Before you can spray paint your garage door, you’ll need to sand it down to remove any old paint or varnish.
You can use a hand sander or an orbital sander for this job. Just be sure to use fine-grit sandpaper so you don’t damage the door.
Once you’ve sanded the door, you can wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove any dust. Then, you’re ready to start spray painting!
Apply primer and spray paint on the garage door
To apply primer and spray paint to your garage door, first make sure that the door is clean and free of any dirt or debris.
Next, using a brush or roller, apply a thin layer of primer to the door, making sure to evenly cover the entire surface. Apply 2-3 coats of primer for better adherence and result and let it dry.
Once the primer is dry, apply a thin layer of spray paint, again making sure to evenly cover the entire surface. Finally, allow the paint to dry completely before opening the door.
Apply 2-3 coats of spray paint and wait in between coats. I suggest you to wait 2 to 3 hours in between coats so the paint dries before spraying another coat.
Apply clear coat
It is important to apply a clear coat after spray painting your garage door. This will protect the paint from chipping and fading.
To apply a clear coat, first make sure the paint is completely dry. Then, using a clean, dry cloth, apply a thin layer of clear coat to the door. Allow the clear coat to dry completely before opening the door.
Clean up the area
After you have finished spray painting your garage door, it is important to clean up the area to avoid any accidents. Here are some tips on how to clean up the area after spray painting:
- Wipe down the area with a damp cloth to remove any excess paint.
- Be sure to dispose of any paint cans or other materials properly.
- Use a vacuum cleaner with an attachment to clean up any loose paint particles.
- Make sure the area is well ventilated to allow the paint to dry properly.
